Is CBD Dopamine Agonist?
By definition a dopamine agonist is a chemical (not dopamine), that attaches to the dopamine receptors in the brain recreating dopamine’s natural action. CBD can be considered a partial dopamine agonist as it appears to interact with the dopamine neurotransmitter system activating receptors to alter dopamine levels. There are no conclusive research findings on this subject, only anecdotal reports.
Does CBD Oil Increase Dopamine Levels?
Although there is not yet enough research evidence to determine CBD’s exact relationship to dopamine it appears to interact with dopamine receptors which then balance the level of dopamine in the body.
Does CBD Stimulate Dopamine?
It is possible that CBD may interact with dopamine receptors increasing dopamine neural activity but further research is necessary. By stimulating dopamine CBD may potentially be able to restore balance to dopamine levels, whether the body requires more or less at the time. CBD may have the potential for use in the rehabilitation of opioid addicts by decreasing dopamine levels while in other studies there are reports that CBD may be used to relieve the symptoms of ADHD by blocking GABA allowing the body to produce higher levels of dopamine. This means that CBD could potentially be effective in relieving symptoms of over or under production of these hormones and chemicals.
Does CBD Affect Serotonin?
In certain concentrations CBD may be able to interact with serotonin receptors which are responsible for regulating stress, appetite, pain, nausea, sleep patterns and anxiety and influence the receptors to help balance these bodily functions. CBD interacts with receptor systems in the body effecting serotonin, dopamine and other hormone and chemical levels. Current opinion is that CBD’s influence on the serotonin receptors may affect how the brain’s receptors respond to serotonin creating an anti-anxiety and anti-depressant effect. CBD doesn’t boost serotonin itself but may affect how the body’s receptors respond to serotonin producing an antidepressant and anti-anxiety effect. Low serotonin levels are linked to anxiety and CBD’s anti-anxiety properties may bring relief to sufferers.
